Food review at Sakae Sushi – by Ryan Tan

I love Japanese food as I myself am part Japanese. I have been to Japan a few times. Every time I will go to my cousin’s house in Nagasaki Japan. During my visits, I will always eat beef teriyaki don. Fast forward time to last week, where I followed some of my friends to sakae sushi.

Over there, I ate my favourite Japanese dish, beef teriyaki don. It was sort of different compared to the real thing. The real one had sweeter sauce, bigger onions and was… just a better dish. It was still delicious and a very good attempt to recreate the real thing.

Here is a recipe for this delicious meal I found on the internet:

Ingredients:

8 oz beef flap meat
Some oil for pan-frying

Marinade

1/2 tablespoon soy sauce
1/2 tablespoon sake

Teriyaki Sauce (Tare)

2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons sake
2 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoon mirin
1 teaspoon corn starch (mixed with 1 teaspoon water)

Garnishing

White sesame seeds
Some chopped scallions, optional

Method:

Slice the beef into thin pieces, across the grain. Marinate the beef with the Marinade, for about 20 minutes.

Mix all the ingredients in the Teriyaki Sauce. Heat up a small sauce pan and prepare the sauce. As soon as the sauce starts to bubble, remove it from the heat.

Add some oil to your skillet and pan-fry the beef, until slightly charred. Transfer the beef to a serving ware, and add the Teriyaki Sauce on top. Garnish with white sesame seeds and chopped scallions, if used. Serve the beef teriyaki immediately with steamed white rice.

Then of course there is egg tamago, a super delicious sushi mainly composed of  egg rice and seaweed. Well, when I was first introduced to it, I  thought it was awesome. The way the egg melts in the mouth. The  way the rice tasted. Then I did something that we all thought was stupid. I dipped the whole sushi into wasabi and swallowed it. Many people say that wasabi is very spicy but I personally think that is false. It wasn’t spicy at all.

Thank you for reading!
